Here we discuss in brief the sanctions on the Central Bank of Russia post 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

3. Freezing central bank/reserve assets held abroad
1. The EU and other western nations froze the foreign-asset reserves of Central Bank of Russia (and certain state-controlled banks) held abroad.
2. The frozen reserves are worth $350bn which is about half its total reserves.
3. Russia cannot use its foreign-currency reserves (USD, EUR) stored overseas, and hence cannot tap them to stabilise rouble, finance imports, defend currency.

1. The Russian bank’s Nostro accounts with US Banks were blocked, like VTB Bank, Sberbank, Bank of Russia
2. Transactions with the Russian central bank, other Russian banks, and certain state-owned financial entities were prohibited
3. Several Russian banks were cut off from the global messaging system SWIFT.
4. A ban was also imposed on use of Russian domestic payment systems (e.g. for energy trade) by third-country financial institutions.
5. Ban on Russian access to Western capital markets, debt/equity financing
1. New debt issuance, equity issuance by Russian state-owned entities was banned in US/EU/UK markets.
2. Russian firms / banks cannot raise capital or obtain financing from Western financial institutions or investors.
